Dhirubhai Ambani University – School of Law Redefining the Role of Lawyers at the General Counsel Association of India Summit

We are proud to announce that Prof (Dr) Avinash Dadhich, Founding Director of the School of Law – Dhirubhai Ambani University, recently participated in the General Counsels’ Association of India (GCAI) conference titled “Rethink, Redefine, Re-Evolve: The Legal Profession in India,” held on January 31, 2025, at the India International Centre, New Delhi.

In his address, Prof. Dadhich emphasized the critical need for statutory recognition of General Counsels (GCs) as practicing lawyers under the Advocates Act, 1961. He highlighted that such recognition would not only validate the pivotal role GCs play within corporate structures but also enhance their ability to contribute effectively to the legal profession.

Prof. Dadhich also discussed the evolving landscape of legal education in India, advocating for reforms that align curricula with the dynamic demands of the legal industry, and stated that the education system should allow for greater input from legal professionals in how lawyers are educated instead of placing lawyers and educators in separate silos. He underscored the importance of equipping future legal professionals with the skills necessary to navigate complex legal challenges in a rapidly changing environment.

Prof. (Dr.) Dadhich was also joined by accomplished panelists on the dais including Mr. Naveen Tuli, Managing Partner at Major, Lindsey & Africa; Prof. Shubhashis Gangopadhyay, Founding Dean at Indian School of Public Policy (ISPP); Prof (Dr) G S BAJPAI, Vice Chancellor at National Law University, Delhi; Prof. Dr. Ashish Bharadwaj, Founding Dean at BITS Law School, Mumbai and Dr. Risham Garg, Associate Professor, NLU Delhi.

We were also represented at the event by Amitava Ghosh, who has been invaluable in his aid and co-operation over the past year for School of Law – Dhirubhai Ambani University. Their participation underscores our institution’s commitment to engaging with contemporary legal issues and contributing to the advancement of the legal profession in India.
